This project involves the renovation and conversion of the 1922 Historical Nielsen Family Chevrolet/Buick Dealership and Garage located at 2302 13th Street, to an Antique Fire Apparatus and Fire Fighters' Museum.
The 8000 square foot building will house 10 to 12 antique fire trucks, and antique fire chief car, fire fighting equipment gear and other related artifacts along with a fire fighting history picture gallery, honor roll of past Columbus volunteer fire fighters and educational materials. The work to be accomplished includes exterior masonry repair, outside wall painting, new overhead doors, new exterior windows, lighting and signage for the outside and renovation of the interior of the building into a museum.
Currently ther are only two fully developed fire fighting museums in the state of Nebraska (Kearney and Nebraska City). This museum will fill a void in Northeast Nebraska for the display of antique fire equipment and will draw visitors from a 60 to 75 mile radius. The museum will also add to the vitality of Downtown Columbus.
