This Year's Project: Free Services for those living with Lou Gehrig's disease in the Columbus area.
The mission of ALS in the Heartland (hereafter referred to as ALSITH) is to provide the highest quality of support and care for people living with ALS (more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease), their families, and caregivers. Not funded by or under the umbrella of a national organization, 100% of ALSITH proceeds stay right here in Nebraska and western Iowa. However, we must rely on the generosity of giving days and generous donors to help us continue our mission. All donations from Columbus Big Give will be designated for ALS patient families living in the Columbus area.
Current Project: Free Services for those living with Lou Gehrig's disease in the Columbus area.
Columbus Big Give donations will allow ALS in the Heartland to continue to provide all of our services, free of charge, to ALS patient families living specifically in the Columbus area. Services include: 1) Provision of emotional support, and education in the home and/or where the patient family feels most comfortable. 2) A respite grant program which provides financial assistance to hire licensed home-health providers to assist with the ALS patient remaining at home and provide relief to family caregivers. 62% of those served by ALSITH have lived their final days at home due to this program. 3) Equipment loan pool of over 400 items, with delivery provided. Individuals with ALS have been able to stay at their place of employment for a longer period of time with equipment support. 4) A children's grant/scholarship program that provides monetary assistance to youth 0-18 to be able to remain in or become involved in extracurricular activities. 5) A telehealth program allowing virtual visits between home bound and remote patients and ALS in the Heartlands Patient Services staff and/or other health providers.
